Archive for Furbabies in Need of Help

A beautifully done video with very appropriate lyrics.
Look at their faces, look into their eyes. How can you just turn away???
Please adopt your next pet.

On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won’t understand
Don’t accept that what’s happening
Is just a case of others’ suffering
Or you’ll find that you’re joining in
The turning away
It’s a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it’s shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we’re all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerized as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It’s not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there’ll be
No more turning away?

While at the shelter on Friday May 8th, taking photos of the newest arrivals that would be needing homes we came across “Dino’s” kennel.

The first thing to strike me about Dino was his emaciated state. I stepped into his kennel to offer him a pat, though shy, he rose to greet me. It was not until then that I realized he was also blind and his ears were horribley scarred. Although we are full to capacity.already having 43 dogs in our rescue, we knew we could not leave him there to die. I left his kennel and went to speak to the ACO that  did his intake sheet. Dino was not an owner surrender but rather was taken into the shelter as a stray, meaning  whoever was/is responsible for his condition would never have to answer for it. I have wondered many times in the past week since we got him out of the shelter, how many people did he pass in his travels?? In this “neck of the woods” in Virginia where the folks claim to be hospitable, Christian, friendly etc not ONE soul stopped to help this fellow. Ironically enough the same shelter where he was taken to also hands out free dog food to pet owners in need every Thursday so there was  no need of this.

Now that I have vented a bit I am happy to tell you that Dino was taken out of the shelter on Monday May 11th. He was transported to a dear friend of mine Lisa Compton, from Richmond,Va. who will foster him for as long as he needs to be. He was seen by the veterinarian on Tuesday May 12th an weighed 29 lbs. Thankfully he was heartworm negative, however he was positive for hook and whip worms. His blindness we thought was perhaphs caused by malnutrition however the veterinarian that examined him felt Dinos blindness was due to trama and irreversible. He is now resting comfortable  at Lisa’s home on a huge fluffy quilt. He now knows what love and compassion is as well as what it is like to got to sleep NOT hungry…….thanks to Lisa and her family.

We will keep everyone update on this poor souls progress

Meet Pearl and Tater, unfortunately their owner has fallen on somewhat hard times. Sadly, because of the economy, many people are finding it hard to meet their own need let alone the needs of their beloved pets. Thats where we come in, SFF, was able to help Pearl and Tater’s owner by donating 40 lbs of dog food to him  as well as providing Tater & Pearl with basic veterinary care at no charge to their owner. Their owner, will receive monthly food donations for their animals until such time as they are “back on their feet”. Pictured below are Pearl and Tater. This photo was taken  at our veterinarians office while they were awaiting their rabies vaccination and flea preventative. It is only thru  your generosity that we are able to help dogs like Pearl and Tater.  Please help us continue to help out community pet owners in need and if you are in need of assistance please contact us at 276-706-6477.

This is Ray. Ray is a blind, 120 lb, eight year old yellow lab. He was picked up as a stray by local animal control officers in Virginia. We are desperately trying to find either adopters, fosters or sponsors for him, as he needs to be adopted out of the shelter by Saturday Oct 25th or he will be euthanized. Currently, we are full to capacity and have no room for him here. The only way we here at Saving Furry Friends would be able to save him is if we were able to raise funds to board him until we had an opening for him here. If you are interested in adopting sponsoring or fostering Ray please contact us at SavingFurryFriends@yahoo.com

I am posting a few photos of Ray, I know that they are a bit blurry but for now this is all we have. I will be headed to the shelter tomorrow to take new photos of him.

We are in need of some new foster homes. Everyday local area shelters are euthanizing healthy animals simply because they have no room. We save as many as we are able but our space here is limited, our lic is for 40 animals once we reach capacity we are unable to rescue another until one gets adopted leaving literally dozens upon dozens of innocent furry souls euthed weekly. Wont you please consider opening your heart and home to a homeless animal?? We provide the vetting, all you have to do is provide food, and lots of love and attention. If you live in eastern Tn or southwest Va and are interested in becoming a foster for a furbaby, please contact us at savingfurryfriends@yahoo.com for more information.Thank you for your time~Caroline

“The Love in your heart wasnt put there to stay, Love isnt Love until you give it away”

This is Ted. Ted was brought to the shelter by his owners because he dug holes in the backyard. He is terrier mix approx 2 yrs old. He needs to be out of the shelter by Thurs Sept 25nd or he will be euthanized. I seriously doubt that this poor soul has ever known a day of love in life. If you can change that for him by opening your heart and home to him Please email us at SavingFurryFriends@yahoo.com. We are located in Southwest va and are available to pull him and assit with transport.

Terrier in need of a home

I just received a call from  the shelter. A small ( less than 15 lbs)6 yr old terrier was just surrendered by her elderly owner . Shelby was brought in because she has a small mammory tumor as well as several broken teeth. Her owner can not afford treatment for her and brought her in requesting she be pts. Kim then asked the owner if it would be ok if she contacted us to see if we could help Shelby…..the owner agreeded that if help could be found for shelby she should not be put down, adding that she would not be taking Shelby back as she her self was in poor health. I have already been on the phone with our vet who gave us a ballpark figure of 260.00 . This price will cover shelby’s spay, bloodwork, bring her up to date on vaccinations, have a heartworm test and of coarse remove the tumor. I am headed to the shelter this afternoon to see and take photos of Shelby.I will post her photos this afternoon. We can not pull Shelby without help , our rescoures are stretched to the limit. We pulled 5 last week and were able to raise funds for only 1 of the dogs. As always our veterinarians name, number and address are available upon request to all that donate. To donate to Shelby simpley use the donation button on our homepage and note that it is for “Shelby” shelby
